DR: Spot on. I've seen in my 45 years in LE the attempts by our profession to have everyone like or love or trust us. To this end we have take on all kinds of additional responsibilities we are not trained or equipped for. This has eroded our ability to do our primary mission of crime reduction and control. This primary goal is hardly built into agency mission anymore. The slogan serve and protect in my opinion should reference that a major part of service is protection and in fact, it is the major part of service to the communities we serve. If one looks at attempts to stabilize areas in the world, the first item of importance is always security, for without it nothing else gets done.
