We spend a lot of resources on officer wellness programs and, publicly, we say the right things about officer mental health being at the forefront. And all of these resources, all of these speakers, sometimes grifters, beat the drum of trauma and stress due to experiences faced outside the walls of the department. While that certainly plays a role, it pales in comparison to the job-related stress created inside our walls. A vast majority of the time, the reason for work related stress is what we are doing to each other, inside the walls, not what’s taking place outside. I imagine if I were selling a 40 hour course in officer wellness it wouldn’t go over too well telling the people signing the checks that they’re the problem.
